You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers! Here are the most commonly asked questions about throwing Axes with Blue Ridge Axe Throwing. If you have a question that’s not answered here, contact us today and we’ll answer it for you and add it to the list!
Is it safe?
Absolutely. At Blue Ridge Axe Throwing (BRAX) the safety of our guests is our foremost concern. Before throwing all guests will receive a safety orientation including ranges rules and instruction on safe axe handling.
However, no activity is totally risk-free. We do ask all visitors to read and sign our waiver before they are allowed to throw. You can preview the waiver at the link below.
Who can throw?
Just about anyone! No prior training or athletic experience is required. Basically if you can throw a softball you can throw an axe. The axes we use on our range weigh about 2 pounds, about the same as a quart of milk. We find this is a size most people can handle and throw safely.
We do limit participation to ages 12 and older during public throwing hours and for league play. For private events we make exceptions to the age rule on a case-by-case basis, and only if we feel there is adequate adult supervision to ensure a safe experience for all.
Can I have a beer while throwing?
Not at this time. While we (the BRAX team) absolutely LOVE our region’s craft beer scene, we are not a bar. Axe throwing by itself is plenty of fun, and everyone throws their best and safest when they are alcohol free.
We do encourage our guests to bring their own (non-alcoholic) refreshments. Snacks and drinks will be available through our on-site concession as well. The “Axe Lounge” includes plenty of seating and table space to sit, nosh, and socialize.
So come with your friends, toss some steel, then head to one of our area’s many excellent craft breweries or restaurants. Enjoy a cold one and talk about axe throwing! We are in discussion with several of our nearby brewers to offer a discount on your pint when you show your BRAX receipt.
I have heard you are located in the same building as a gun range and showroom? Is that safe?
BRAX is co-located with Safeside Tactical. Obsessed as we are with the safety of our visitors, the Safeside team is even more so. Their staff is fully trained in proper firearm handling, No visitor steps into a Safeside ranges without a thorough safety briefing, and no one exhibiting unsafe behavior is allowed to be onsite. Safeside runs a world class, secure, and tightly supervised facility. We encourage you to check them out!
What equipment is required?
You must wear closed toed shoes in order to throw. We will provide all the other equipment you will need.
Can I bring my own axes?
Yes, but all axes must conform to World Axe Throwing League (WATL) specifications. They must weigh less than 3 pounds. The overall length must be between 12 and 19 inches. They must be single-bit axes and may not have any additional blades or spikes. For details see the “Procedures and Specifications” section of https://worldaxethrowingleague.com/axe-throwing-rules/
How much does it cost?
Should I tip my Axe Coach?
Yes! Our Axe Coaches work hard to make sure you and your friends have a great experience. You may be a first time visitor just trying to get the axe to stick. Or you may be an experienced thrower seeking a few pointers. Either way our coaches are eager to help.
When they’re not working with guests Axe Coaches are busy learning new games to show you, researching throwing technique, sharpening axes, and maintaining targets.
So if you were happy with your visit, by all means tip your Axe Coach. We suggest a 15-20% gratuity. Thank you!
