What is urban axe throwing?
Urban axe throwing originated in Canada 5-10 years ago and has been migrating south to the U.S. and internationally into Europe and Asia. It is a competitive sport involving throwing hatchets and small axes into vertical targets and is often described as “darts on steroids”.
No prior experience or special athletic ability is required to throw axes. Everyone can participate! Our guests can enjoy a range of activities from casual throwing for fun to competitive league play. With practice throwers can even progress to international competition.

We were first introduced to urban axe throwing two years ago during a visit to Indianapolis. We spent an evening with family and friends at the local axe range (Bad Axe Throwing) and had a blast. On our return to Roanoke we searched for places in the region to throw axes but found nothing in Virginia west of Virginia Beach. We realized in order to throw (and to share the fun with others) we’d need to build our own range. The first plans for Blue Ridge Axe Throwing (BRAX) began to form.
After much discussion, planning, and search for a suitable site things finally fell into place in the spring of 2019. We found a perfect setting for the range on a site co-located with Safeside Tactical. At the same time the World Axe Throwing League’s Championship was broadcast on ESPN, creating a groundswell of interest in the sport.
We are so excited to introduce indoor axe throwing to Virginia’s Blue Ridge. We believe the sport is a perfect fit for our region’s “work hard, play harder!” culture. Our vision is a venue where people of all backgrounds and abilities can have fun with old friends, meet lots of new friends, and have the time of their lives tossing steel. Our dream is to develop champion throwers who compete at the international level!
